Described herein is cooling apparatus (100) that utilises the ambient air to effect cooling of electronic equipment. Fans (160a, 160b, 160c, 160d) draw air from an air inlet (105), through an air cleaning system (120), into a plenum chamber (145) in which items to be cooled (150a, 150b, 150c, 150d, 150e, 150f) are located, and out to air outlets (175c, 175d, 190a). Controlled shutters (115, 190, 185) are provided for controlling the air flow rate through the apparatus in conjunction with operation of the fans (160a, 160b, 160c, 160d). Temperature sensors (107, 157) are provided at the air inlet (105) and within the plenum chamber (145) to determine the amount of cooling required. A heater (195a) is provided for heating the air if required. The apparatus (100) operates in several modes depending on the temperature of the ambient air.
