PURPOSE: An apparatus and method of wavelet transform based on update-prediction lifting, an adaptive prediction apparatus and method therefore, and a recording medium therefor are provided to improve the coding efficiency and subjective image quality with the selection of the base function. CONSTITUTION: A dividing unit(31) divides input signal into an even polyphase sample and an odd polyphase sample. An update unit(33) generates and gets an updated even polyphase sample. Based on a specific base functions of a plurality of base functions, the prediction unit(35) gets the residual odd number polyphase sample. A plurality of base functions has various filters of directions and coefficient about the odd number polyphase sample and updated even number polyphase sample.
