The method involves determining distances (D1, D2) i.e. inter vehicle side distances, existing between a vehicle (1) and another vehicle (2) by the latter vehicle when the former vehicle overtakes the latter vehicle, while the vehicles are side by side. The determination of the distances is obtained by distance sensors (3, 4) e.g. infrared distance sensors, placed at same lateral side of the latter vehicle and angularly displaced between each other. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle comprising distance sensors.
