The device (2) has a chassis (4) for mounting a hard-top element (3), and fixation units for fixing the chassis in a soft top vehicle. Displacement units displace the hard-top element on the chassis between a deployed position and a retracted position when the hard-top element is assembled on the chassis. A lock locks the hard-top element on the chassis in the retracted position when the hard-top element is assembled on the chassis. Control units i.e. electric motor, activate the displacement units, and another set of fixation units fix a safety belt (6) to the chassis. An independent claim is also included for a method for mounting a retractable assembly on a soft top vehicle.
