PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance energy efficiency or the like regardless of the largeness of dust to be sucked by a vacuum cleaner. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes: a first dust collection chamber 8 having a first filter 9; a second dust collection chamber 10 arranged on the downstream side of the first dust collection chamber 8 and having a second filter 11 having a mesh finer than the first filter 9; a third dust collection chamber 12 having a third filter 13 having a mesh finer than the first filter 9 and coarser than the second filter 11; and suction air passage switching means 15 for switching air passages, so as to allow suction air passing through the first dust collection chamber 8 to selectively flow in the second dust collection chamber 10 or the third dust collection chamber 12. Dust distribution determining means is provided, which determines the distribution of the dust in a suction path on the upstream side of the first dust collection chamber 8. Control means 22 drives the suction air passage switching means 15 according to the distribution state of the dust, which is determined by the dust distribution determining means, thereby allowing the suction air passing trough the first dust collection chamber 8 to flow in the switched dust collection chamber.
