PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve drivability immediately after an engine is restarted. SOLUTION: An ECU 30 automatically stops the engine 10 loaded on a vehicle when a predetermined automatic stop condition is satisfied, and restarts the engine 10 when a predetermined restart condition is satisfied during the automatic stop of the engine 10. Also, the ECU 30 detects the gradient of the road surface of a vehicle traveling road and the degree of a demand for vehicle immediate start from a driver in restarting, as traveling performance required immediately after the engine 10 is restarted with respect to the vehicle, and increases the torque of the engine 10 when the engine is restarted in comparison with a reference torque in restarting based on a detected result.
