PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine start mechanism and a start method suitable for use in test at a racing place by miniaturizing an external start device by miniaturizing a motor or the like mounted on an external start device and making attachment and detachment work of a cover and the like unnecessary in an engine start mechanism for a push starting type motorcycle starting the engine by forcibly rotating a crankshaft by using the external start device not mounted on a vehicle. SOLUTION: The engine is equipped with an engine output shaft for transmitting drive torque of the crankshaft to a drive wheel. An end part thereof is exposed from a case composing the engine. An engaged part engaged with an engaging part of the external start device is integrally provided on a member provided on the exposed end part so as to rotate integrally with the output shaft.
