The invention relates to a gel layer suitable for use as a skin dressing, wherein said layer comprises a homogeneous mixture of glycerol and collagen. A wound dressing comprising the gel layer, a cosmetic method for improving the appearance of skin, and a gel layer suitable for topical use in treating a wound are also described.
