PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device for actualizing fail-safe stop quickly and accurately with no erroneous determination during output short, independently of input voltage or output conditions while holding an inexpensive circuit structure. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device includes a control part 8 for making a fail-safe determination to stop all a DC/DC converter 4 and a H bridge 5 when identifying that output voltage detected by an output voltage detecting part 30 gets lower than a selective threshold value or an output current detected by an output current detecting part 40 gets greater than a selective threshold value, while driving the DC/DC converter 4 and the H bridge 5 to supply adequate power to a discharge lamp 7.
