Devices (40) are provided for using ambient light (325) to illuminate transmissive displays (305). One such backlight (310) includes a light source (405) configured to provide artificial light (407) to the transmissive display (305) when the backlight (310) is closed and a surface (330) configured to reflect ambient light (325) to the transmissive display (305) when the backlight (310) is open. Another backlight (310) includes a surface (330) configured to provide ambient light (525) to the transmissive display (305) even when the backlight (310) is closed. In some implementations, power to the light source (405) may be reduced or shut off when the backlight (310) is open and/or when sufficient ambient light (325) is being provided to the transmissive display(305).
