PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining an origin of a biomass sample, for precisely determining a tendency of edible and inedible parts in the origin of the biomass sample, and to provide a method for determining a production area of rice, for precisely determining the production area by using a hydrogen stable isotope ratio. SOLUTION: The hydrogen stable isotope ratio, an oxygen stable isotope ratio and/or a carbon stable isotope ratio about edible and inedible parts of a plural kinds of biomasses are measured beforehand as reference data by using a mass spectrometry, and collation data obtained by conducting a similar measurement about a biomass sample being an object to be determined are compared with the reference data. In another embodiment, the hydrogen stable isotope ratio of a fatty acid derivative obtained by methyl esterifying an extracted fatty acid component is measured beforehand as reference data about rice samples in a plurality of production areas, by using the mass spectrometry, and collation data obtained by conducting a similar measurement about a rise sample of a production area being an object to be determined are compared with the reference data.
