The method involves representing logical symbols (6-1-6-5) with different positions on a display surface (2), and defining a zone (7) assigned to each symbol. The position of a cursor (8) on the display surface is displayed until an input device (4) is arranged in an operating condition. The display of the position of the cursor on the display surface is controlled by a control unit (3) in such a manner that one of the symbols assigned to the cursor is selected when the input device is arranged in a non-operating condition, where the input unit has a touch-sensitive operating panel.
