PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool whose hard coating layer exhibits excellent wear resistance in high-speed heavy intermittent cutting in which high heat is generated. SOLUTION: In the surface coated cutting tool having the hard coating layer vapor deposited on the surface of a tool base body, a lower layer is made of a Ti compound layer, an upper layer is formed by an alternate lamination structure having aluminum oxide layers with an average one layer thickness of 0.8-1.5μm and zirconium-containing aluminum oxide layers with an average one layer thickness of 0.4-0.6μm, and the composition of the zirconium-containing aluminum oxide layers changes along the layer thickness direction with the zirconium content showing the maximum value of 13-16 atom% in the intermediate region in the layer thickness direction.
