PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device which is made compact. SOLUTION: In the projection display device 1, an illumination optical system 3, a display panel 4 functioning as an optical modulation means and a projection optical system 5 are held in a holding housing 8 functioning as an optical component holding housing, and the projection optical system 5 is held inside the holding housing 8 without a lens barrel.
