A wireless communication apparatus (100) comprises: antennas (111, 112, 113); a threshold value determining unit (141) that uses a particular directional characteristic pattern to measure a first radio wave propagation environment parameter and that determines one of a plurality of threshold values which corresponds to the first radio wave propagation environment parameter measured; a directional characteristic pattern selecting unit (142) that sequentially switches a plurality of directional characteristic patterns to attempt to communicate and that selects a directional characteristic pattern for which an actual throughput calculated from the measured value of a second radio wave propagation environment parameter exceeds the threshold value; and a threshold value adjusting unit (143) that changes the threshold value, which has been determined by the threshold value determining unit (141), in accordance with the number of attempts that is equal to the number of directional characteristic patterns for which the directional characteristic pattern selecting unit (142) performs the attempts.
