PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber for securing damping persistence in a large stroke by stabilizing damping responsiveness in a very small stroke, by opening a valve at once when switching to an extension process from a contraction process. SOLUTION: A valve lift control member 32 oppositely arranged to a suction valve 23 is arranged on the cylinder lower chamber 7 side of a valve body 16, and a plurality of projections 37 are arranged in the peripheral direction of the suction valve 23 on the suction valve 23 side of the valve lift control member 32, and a predetermined clearance is provided between the projections 37 and the suction valve 23. Thus, the valve is instantly opened when switching to the extension process from the contraction process, and rigidity of the suction valve 23 in the very small stroke is substantially improved, and the damping responsiveness of the suction valve 23 in the very small stroke is stabilized. In a large stroke, since a part largely deflects (lifts) while both ends of the suction valve 23 are supported by the projections 37, the damping persistence in the large stroke is secured.
