1363211 Pattern recognition GEOMETRIC DATA CORP 22 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 8005/72 Heading G4R A pattern recognition system, e.g. for identifying different types of blood cells, includes a store to which are fed quantized signals representing the field of view containing the pattern. The store feeds counters which are incremented when two or more selected stages of the store have a certain state, the count indicating the pattern type. Signals resulting from scanning the field are quantized to binary form in which, for example, a 1-bit represents a part of the nucleus of a blood cell. The binary signal passes to a store comprising serially-connected shift registers (SR1-41, Fig. 4, not shown). As the binary signal moves through the store, the outputs from various stages are sampled. For example, stages corresponding to the end points of six equal-length lines lying at different angles in the field are sampled (76-86, Fig. 3, not shown), the movement of the signal through the store effectively stepping the lines through the image. Other stages corresponding to the end points of groups of lines of other lengths are also sampled. Whenever both ends of a line in a particular group are in the nucleus (i.e. both are 1-bits) a corresponding counter is incremented. When the pattern has been shifted through the store the output of one of the counters is selected, being that counter which has previously been found to result in the best discrimination between the cells to be recognized. The counter output is normalized by dividing it by a count corresponding to the number of 1-bits in the signal fed to the store. The resulting signal is compared against a number of ranges of values, the range within which it falls indicating the cell type. Instead of sampling the two end points of lines, three or more points may be sampled, the points defining the apices of a polygon. |
