The separator has a drum (10) pivotable about a vertical axis and including a disk stack (20) made of multiple conical disks. An inlet (13) feeds suspension of a liquid, and a liquid outlet (23) is provided above the stack. A sludge outlet (26) is provided at a periphery of a solid space. A slide valve (30) includes passage openings passing over the outlet openings in a drum wall. Sludge outlet openings (27) are closable and/or openable by the valve. The passage openings pass from an upper closing position into a lower closing position during unidirectional movement of the valve.
