<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing phenol, whereby phenol is obtained through a reaction between monochlorobenzene and water in a liquid phase or a critical phase in high yield without producing a large amount of a byproduct. <P>SOLUTION: The method for preparing phenol uses zeolite H-ZSM-5 as a catalyst. The H-ZSM-5 preferably has a molar ratio of Si/Al of ≤25, as an excessively large molar ratio leads to insufficient catalyst activity.
