PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader providing an image of high image quality when a fluctuation in current flowing through a light source is small while suppressing a deterioration in image quality when the fluctuation is large, and to provide an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image reader includes: a light source turned on with brightness corresponding to current to be supplied; a control means for controlling current to be supplied to the light source; a reading means for reading an original irradiated with light from the light source to generate image data; and a determining means for determining the magnitude of a fluctuation in current flowing through the light source while the reading means reads an original group comprising one or more originals, wherein the control means makes the current to be supplied to the light source larger when the determining means determines that the fluctuation is large than when it determines that the fluctuation is small when the reading means reads the original group.
