PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat seal unit in a packaging machine which can make a good vertical seal by stabilizing forces to press both side edges uniformly when heat sealing is performed by pinching both side edges of a tubular packaging material in a steep rafter roof shape. SOLUTION: Abutment surfaces 6, 6, of a heater block holder 2, 2 are provided at a position to hold an action position of driving force by a ball screw 28 as a driving mechanism between heater blocks 3 providing vertical heat sealer parts 5, 5. Therefore when side edges of the tubular packaging material are pinched in the steep rafter roof shape by the heater blocks 3, 3, deformation of the heater blocks 3, 3 can be reduced largely. Detailed positions of the vertical heat sealer parts 5, 5 can be detected and also pinching a minute foreign substance, presence or absence of the packaging material, wrinkle generation or abnormal overlapping of side edges, abnormal thickness can be detected.
