<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric sensor sufficiently widening an object detection distance range by preventing a malfunction in a short range. <P>SOLUTION: The photoelectric sensor is equipped with: a light projection system for projecting light toward a monitoring region; a light reception system including a light reception element receiving reflected light from the monitoring region to output a signal corresponding to the light reception amount of the light reception element; and a detecting means for determining the level of the output signal of the light reception system to detect the presence/absence of an object in the monitoring region. The light projection amount and the light reception gain are set to be high when the measurement range is set at a long range, and are set to be low when the measurement range is set at the short range.
