PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a blood filter device and method for filtering blood in a patient specified to be in danger of embolization.SOLUTION: The device 10 generally includes a mesh 40 for filtering blood flowing within a blood vessel particularly within an artery such as the aorta, a structure adapted to open/close the mesh 40 within the blood vessel, and a means for actuating the structure. The method generally includes steps of: introducing the mesh 40 into the blood vessel to entrap an embolic material; adjusting the mesh 40 if necessary during the course of filtration; and removing the mesh 40 and entrapped foreign matter from the blood vessel. Additionally, a visualization technique is used to ensure effective filtration.
