PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator for a multi-storied building facilitated in maintenance, capable of securing a sufficient space for repairing in a failure and for rescue of passengers even in the case of a failure and an accident in an emergency, and having high safety. SOLUTION: In a horizontal cross section of a multi-storied building, as a space for the installation of an elevator, a stairwell space 11 having a sufficiently large horizontal cross section in comparison with a total area of the horizontal cross section of a cage 12 is formed. Each cage 12 has an opening/closing door 12a for passengers getting on/off and a fire door 12b for blocking at an elevator hall 13 side, and a surface on the opposite side faces the stairwell space 11. A first floor of the stairwell space 11 is provided with a refresh corner 11a as a living space so that people can get into/out through an entrance 11c provided at a side surface. The entrance 11c can be used for maintenance work, and can be used as an evacuation doorway in an emergency. Furthermore, a space 11b for piping and wiring can be secured in the stairwell space 11.
