PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultraviolet irradiation apparatus capable of detecting the position of a cleaning brush in a noncontact manner without causing uneven ultraviolet irradiation. SOLUTION: In the ultraviolet irradiation apparatus 1 for ultraviolet treatment of a fluid to be treated introduced into a treatment tank 2 by ultraviolet irradiation from a plurality of ultraviolet lamps 12 each inserted into a protective tube 10 and arranged at regular intervals around the center axis O of the treatment tank 2, a cleaning plate 21 is provided for cleaning the surface of the protective tube 10 of the ultraviolet lamp 12 while reciprocating along the center axis O. The cleaning plate 21 is provided with a metal rod 71 disposed at a position facing a closing flange 4 for closing the end face of the treatment tank 2, and the closing flange 4 is provided with a proximity sensor 60 for detecting the proximity of the metal rod 71 of the cleaning plate 21. The cleaning plate 21 is stopped on the basis of the detection of the metal rod 71 by the proximity sensor 60 when the cleaning plate 21 is moving toward the closing flange 4 provided with the proximity sensor 60.
