PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester for electrophotographic toner giving an electrophotographic toner which ensures high color reproducibility of a color image and is so excellent in offset resistance that it hardly adheres to a fixing roller, and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The polyester for electrophotographic toner is obtained by polymerizing starting monomers in the presence of at least one tetravalent inorganic tin represented by general formula (1): Sn(X<SB>1</SB>)<SB>m</SB>(X<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>as a polymerization catalyst, wherein X<SB>1</SB>represents a monovalent anionic ligand; X<SB>2</SB>represents -OR or -OCOR; R represents alkyl, aryl, alkenyl or a heterocyclic group; n represents an integer of 2-4 and m represents an integer of 0-2, provided that n+m=4; X<SB>1</SB>and X<SB>2</SB>, a plurality of symbols X<SB>1</SB>, and a plurality of symbols X<SB>2</SB>may be the same or different and may bond to each other to form a ring.
