PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for protecting an internal combustion engine, which surely protect apparatuses such as the engine and an exhaust system even if an exhaust gas temperature is suddenly raised. SOLUTION: This device for protecting the internal combustion engine, for detecting abnormality based on the exhaust gas temperature and protecting the internal combustion engine includes: an exhaust gas temperature detection means for detecting the exhaust gas temperature of the internal combustion engine; a change ratio calculation means for calculating the change ratio of the exhaust gas temperature per predetermined time unit; a trip value setting means for setting a trip value to a lower value as the change ratio is high; and a stop means for stopping fuel supply when the exhaust gas temperature is higher than the trip value set by the trip value setting means.
