<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin side-light type spread illuminating apparatus having small loss of light and a large display region. <P>SOLUTION: The spread illuminating apparatus 10 includes an LED 11, a light guide plate 21, and an FPC 31 mounted with the LED 11. The light guide plate 21 includes: a light incident end face 22 on which the LED 11 is arranged; a light-emitting portion 28 to planarly emit light from the LED 11 incident from the light incident end face 22; an inclined portion 27 of which the thickness gradually decreases as going toward the side of the light-emitting portion 28 and which is formed between the light incident end face 22 and the light-emitting portion 28; and a pedestal 29 formed at the inclined portion 27 and fixing the FPC 31. The inclined portion 27 has its length L1 which is set to 1.78 times of the maximum thickness T1 of the inclined portion.
