PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive sheet carrying device by improving detection accuracy when detecting the carrying state of a sheet based on the detection of a load variation in a drive motor. SOLUTION: The sheet carrying device includes a drive means for generating a drive force for carrying the sheet, a carrier roller for carrying the sheet by being rotatively driven at first peripheral velocity by the drive force from the drive means, and a paper feeding roller arranged at the document carrying upstream side of the carrier roller and rotatively driven at second peripheral velocity lower than the first peripheral velocity by the drive means from the drive means. A one-way clutch and a torque limiter are arranged in a drive system of the paper feeding roller, and when starting the carrying of the sheet by the carrier roller, the load variation is increased.
