1383055 Polymerizing butadiene FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 16 March 1972 [7 April 1971] 12466/72 Heading C3P Polymers of 1,3-butadiene are made by polymerizing in the substantial absence of diluents, a charge consisting of 60 to 100% by weight butadiene, 0 to 40% by weight comonomers soluble in 1,3-butadiene together with 200 to 3000 parts by weight per million parts of 1,3- butadiene, of a 1,2-diene of formula CH 2 =C= CHR where R is H or a C 1 -C 3 alkyl group (e.g. 1,2-butadiene) in a reactor of capacity at least 68 litres using a lithium hydrocarbon catalyst containing 1-40 carbon atoms, the initial temperature of 27-66‹ C. being maintained until the heat of reaction cannot be removed because of increasing viscosity whereupon the temperature surges to a peak which is kept below 204‹ C. by the presence of the 1,2-diene. Copolymerizable monomers specified are styrene, different α-alkyl styrenes, isoprene, piperylene and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene. Sec. butyl chloride may also be present, replacing a portion of the 1,2-diene. |
