1293995 Microbiological production of carotinoid-containing concentrates INSTITUT MIKROBIOLOGII IMENI AVGUSTA KIRKHENSHTEINA AKADEMII NAUK LATVIISKOI SSR 4 Dec 1970 57658/70 Heading C6F [Also in Division C2] In a microbiological process for the production of carotinoid-containing concentrates wherein carotinoid-producing micro-organisms e.g. Rhodotorula gracilis, are subjected to aerobic culturing in a nutrient medium until the microbial material accumulates in the fermentation medium, part of the medium is separated off until the residual medium contains at least 50 g/l of accumulated microbial material, calculated on dry matter basis, and the concentrated microbial material is maintained at a temperature of 28-35‹C., a pH of 5-7 and at an aeration rate of 80-150 mg O 2 per litre per minute, typically for 48 hours, in order to accumulate carotinoids. During this, there may added carbon-containing compounds (saccharose) in a proportion of 0À5-5% by weight, with the object of minimizing dry matter losses in the cell mass, and the trace elements Co, Cu, Fe, I, Mn and Zn in the form of salts in specified amounts, to stimulate the accumulation of carotinoids. Purified carotinoid preparations are obtained by washing the concentrated microbial mass with water and adding thereto 0À5-1À5% by weight of sodium chloride. The resultant product may be spray-dried. |
