<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal which can reduce occurrence of malfunction based on an input from a touchpad without giving a user any impression that response to the input to the touchpad is bad. <P>SOLUTION: The portable terminal, on the basis of a value indicating a degree of contact output from the touchpad, can operate for each range in which contact is detected by switching between a first state wherein a value indicating a degree of contact of the range is generated and a second state wherein a value that is adjusted so that a temporal variation of the value indicating a degree of contact within the range falls within a predetermined value is generated. Switching is made to the first state when the value generated in the second state exceeds a first threshold for determining a target range assigned for processing to be executed, and to the second state when the value generated in the first state falls below a second threshold that is lower than the first threshold.
