<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel photoelectric conversion element and a solar cell using a compound (dye) which has a favorable adsorptive property to an oxide semiconductor and high photoelectric conversion efficiency with high durability. <P>SOLUTION: The photoelectric conversion element includes a pair of electrodes facing each other, a semiconductor layer formed by holding at least a sensitizing dye on a semiconductor and a charge transfer layer, both of which are disposed between the electrodes. The sensitizing dye contains a compound represented by a general formula (1) where R<SB>4</SB>represents one of a phenyl group, a naphthyl group or the like which may or may not be substituted, or an aryl group which may or may not be substituted, an alkyl group substituted by a heterocyclic group or an electron-attracting group. Moreover, Ar<SB>1</SB>represents an arylene group or a heterocyclic group which may or may not be substituted. R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>each independently represents an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or the like, or a heterocyclic group which may or may not be substituted. R<SB>3</SB>represents a hydrogen group or an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or the like which may or may not be substituted.
