PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately determine the timing of writing an image in a main-scanning direction for each scanning line in a display which displays the image in both forward scans and backward scans by a two-dimensional scanning of a luminous flux. SOLUTION: A reference position is determined on the basis of the forward and the backward passing timings of the luminous flux which passes a specific position, the writing-out position of the image is determined with the determined reference position as a starting point, a light source is driven on the basis of the determined writing-out position of the image, boundary points between the effective area and the non-effective area of the respective forward and backward scanning lines, which are adjacent to each other, are detected on the basis of the signal output from an optical detector, the center position between the two boundary points is determined, and the writing-out position of the image is corrected, so that the error of the determined center position with respect to the reference position is reduced.
