PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission advantageous in terms of gear efficiency, gear noise, duration reliability and cost while attaining eight forward speeds by three planetary and six friction elements. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission includes a single pinion first planetary gear PG1, a single pinion third planetary gear PG3 and a double pinion second planetary gear PG2. At least eight forward speeds and one reverse speed are attained by a combination of simultaneous engagements of two of six friction elements composed of a first clutch C1 selectively connecting a carrier PC1 with a rotary member M1, a second clutch C2 selectively connecting the carrier PC1 with a ring gear R2, a third clutch C3 selectively connecting a ring gear R1 with the rotary member M1, a fourth clutch C4 selectively connecting the ring gear R1 with a rotary member M2, a first brake B1 for locking the rotation of the rotary member M2, and a second brake B2 for locking the rotation of the ring gear R2.
