PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compress subtitle data used for display of text information and graphical data and coded as pixel bitmaps. SOLUTION: The run-length encoding method consists of four stages. Concretely, shorter and longer sequences of pixels of a predetermined color (transparent), are encoded using the second or third shortest code words, single pixels of individual color value are encoded using the shortest code words, and shorter and longer sequences of pixels of equal color value are encoded using the third or fourth shortest code words.
