<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single-phase AC synchronous motor for achieving at least one of vibration reduction at a start time, power consumption reduction at a plurality of simultaneous starts, and further smooth pull-in to synchronous rotation, and also to provide a method of controlling the single-phase AC synchronous motor. <P>SOLUTION: In the single-phase AC synchronous motor 1, a control unit 19 performs: a first starting operation for making switching control of starting switching elements 21 to 24 according to a detection signal of a sensor 32, and gradually increasing a duty of voltage energized to a motor coil 30 to increase an energizing voltage gradually; and a second starting operation for performing switching control of the starting switching elements 21 to 24 according to an internal synchronous signal generated based on information on a frequency of a single-phase AC power supply 2 acquired in advance instead of the detection signal of the sensor 32 when a rotational speed of a permanent magnet rotor 31 reaches a prescribed rotational speed close to a synchronous rotational speed.
