<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel photoelectric conversion element used as an organic thin-film solar cell etc. <P>SOLUTION: The photoelectric conversion element has a first electrode and a second electrode, and has an active layer between the first electrode and the second electrode, and the active layer contains an organic compound having a structural unit represented by formula (1). In the formula, R<SP>1</SP>is hydrogen, alkyl, alkyloxy, alkylthio, aryl, aryloxy, arylthio, aryl alkyl, aryl alkyloxy, aryl alkylthio, aryl alkenyl, aryl alkynyl, amino, substituted amino, silyl, substituted silyl, silyloxy, substituted silyloxy, monovalent heterocyclic, halogen, acyl, acyloxy, amide, carboxyl, nitro, or cyano.
