<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeding apparatus, along with an image forming apparatus, that prevents a decline in productivity caused by the sheet feeding apparatus of an air feeding type, by detecting such a state that a feeding may become defective, before feeding and by eliminating an unnecessary feeding. <P>SOLUTION: A sheet feeding apparatus includes: a rear end sheet surface detection sensor 140 for detecting a rear end side of a feeding direction of an uppermost sheet loaded in a sheet tray 12; a front end sheet surface detection sensor 141 for detecting a front end side of a feeding direction of an uppermost sheet; and a CPU 301. The CPU 301 limits a starting of a sheet feeding action of a feeding unit 29, when lifting the sheet tray 12 toward the feeding unit 29 and stopping at the predetermined position, in a case that the rear end sheet surface detection sensor 140 and the front end sheet surface detection sensor 141 do not detect a sheet at the same time.
