DEPOLARIZING ELEMENT AND OPTICAL APPARATUS USING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a depolarizing element capable of generating various polarization states.

SOLUTION: A plurality of sub-wavelength structure areas having structural birefringence are disposed adjacent to one another on a substrate surface layer part. Each of the sub-wavelength structure areas includes grooves repeatedly arrayed in a cycle shorter than that of the wavelength of light to be used, and the sub-wavelength structure areas are disposed so as to have different portions between the sub-wavelength structure areas adjacent to each other in the optical axis direction being the arraying direction of the grooves. Further, the depolarizing element includes the grooves having different depths.
