<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase efficiency in initial charging of a CMC and to make an initial charging circuit compact by reducing a loss caused by a resistor in the initial charging. <P>SOLUTION: A cascade converter system in which unit cells each comprising a two-way chopper circuit etc. are connected to a cascade is characterized in that the initial charging circuit is connected to an AC output of a cascade converter in parallel to a main circuit of the cascade converter.
