<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a winding device capable of carrying out quality improvement of a battery element. <P>SOLUTION: An electrode sheet conveying mechanism conveying a negative electrode sheet 6 includes a cutter mechanism 81 cutting the negative electrode sheet 6, a sheet feeding mechanism 82 gripping the negative electrode sheet 6 when carrying out sheet cutting and sending the negative electrode sheet 6 to a winding mechanism 65 by its own movement while gripping the negative electrode sheet 6 after cutting, and a detection sensor 91 capable of detecting a boundary portion D of an active material applied part 51 and an active material unapplied part 52 on the negative electrode sheet 6. By moving the cutter mechanism 81 integrally with the sheet feeding mechanism 82 in a state of maintaining an interval with the sheet feeding mechanism 82 at a certain interval L, a predetermined position M1 on the negative electrode sheet 6 based upon the boundary portion D is positioned as a gripping position by the sheet feeding mechanism 82.
