The method involves emitting high frequency signal (S2) toward a motor vehicle (1) with a range (P2) on high frequency coverage (C2) by a remote controller (3), and emitting low frequency signal (S1) of another range (P1) on low frequency coverage (C1) toward the remote controller by the motor vehicle in response to the high frequency signal. Maneuvering of a retractable roof is authorized by emission of another high frequency signal from the remote controller toward the motor vehicle when the remote controller is in a zone covered by the low frequency coverage. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling operation of a drophead top or a retractable roof of a motor vehicle.
