A conventional continuous oxygen slot nozzle scarfing unit can be adapted for selectively scarfing the flanges of beam blanks without scarfing the web by inserting a removable flow restricting plug into the oxygen nozzle slot. The plug may vary in size and may be shaped to direct the flow of the oxygen. Auxiliary air streams may be used in conjunction with the plug to prevent molten metal from flowing over onto the web. The modified scarfing unit may be used in conventional four-sided self-sizing scarfing machines. |
