1298098 Petroleum coke ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 25 Sept 1970 [2 Oct 1969] 45822/70 Heading C5E Petroleum coke is made by coking a tar residue boiling at a temperature above 480‹ C. (reduced to atmospheric pressure) derived by steam cracking a hydrocarbon distillate fraction and distilling off the cracked products boiling below 480‹ C. The tar may be a vacuum residue boiling above 480‹ C. under 40 mm. Hg pressure. In an illustrated embodiment (not shown) the cracked products are distilled in two columns in series, the second dealing with tar from the first, the coker feed passing via a heater to delayed coking drums for treatment at 400‹ to 550‹ C. and 40 to 200 bars for from 1 to 5 hours. Volatiles from the drums may be recycled to the first column. Alternatively, fluidized bed coking may be employed. The product coke may be calcined.
