<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head-mounted display at a low cost by using only one image display element. <P>SOLUTION: There are provided a two-dimensional image display element, an eyepiece optical system, a right eye shutter and a left eye shutter. The both shutters comprises two electrochromic elements interposed with each other, each of which transmit linearly polarized light in a predetermined polarization direction when voltage is not applied, and transmit all polarized light when voltage is applied.
