PURPOSE: A method for controlling an automatic gain and an apparatus thereof are provided to reduce loss due to a conversion time by simplifying an AGC(Automatic Gain Control) structure through the control of an ADC(Analog to Digital Converter) and a DAC(Digital to Analog Converter). CONSTITUTION: A first controlling part(252) determines the number of switching gain blocks(230, 240) for controlling a gain. The first controlling part sets a target level for each switching gain block which is determined. The first controlling part generates a control signal by comparing the target level calculated for an inputted signal with the target level of each set switching gain block. The switching gain block controls the gain by controlling the switching of each switching gain block according to a generated control signal. A second controlling part(260) controls the maintenance of an adjusted gain according to preamble reception. A variable gain amplifier controls the gain according to the control of the first controlling part and the second controlling part.
