<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor element with successful responsiveness even at low temperature and a gas sensor using the sensor element. <P>SOLUTION: The sensor element 500 has: a solid electrolyte layer 310; a reference electrode 320 and a detection electrode 340 provided in the solid electrolyte layer so as to face each other via the solid electrolyte layer 310. The sensor element 500 is further equipped with an intermediate layer 330 provided between the detection electrode 340 and the solid electrolyte layer 310.
