<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound having a negative Δε, a larger absolute value of Δε, a value of a larger Δn, excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal material and lower viscosity and showing high liquid crystallinity, to provide a practical liquid crystal composition using the compound and to provide a liquid crystal display element. <P>SOLUTION: A fluoronaphthalene derivative is provided which is represented by general formula (I).
