1353115 Aluminium trifluoride METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 10 Feb 1972 [10 Feb 1971] 6344/72 Heading C1A AlF 3 is prepared by reacting HF with Al(OH) 3 or hydrated Al 2 O 3 in an expanded fluidized bed reactor wherein (a) the solids discharged together with the gases at the top of the reactor are separated and recycled in part to the fluidized bed, (b) the HF is supplied in liquid form directly into the fluidized bed at a point above the grate of the reactor but below the recycled solids inlet, and (c) at least part of the heat required is supplied by hot combustion gases. 98% HF at a temp. of 15‹ C. may be supplied via lances 16 into the reactor 13 above grate 11 but below recycle solids inlet 17. The bed may be fluidized to a solids concen. of 10-100 kg/m<SP>3</SP> by hot combustion gases supplied at a rate of 0À5-3 m/sec. via 14. The hydrated Al 2 O 3 feed may be dewatered by injection into the Venturi-type fluidized bed drier 3 containing the hot gases discharged from the top of the reactor, the dewatered Al 2 O 3 then being collected in cyclones 4 and 5 and fed into the reactor via 19. The Al(OH) 3 feed may be supplied directly via 9 into the reactor. The solids discharged from the hot gases containing them in cyclone 8 and recycled to the reactor via 17. The product AlF 3 is withdrawn at 18. |
